It’s been a long, bad week. I’ve been mostly unproductive and I’m glad that it’s over. But then, it’s never really over. If nothing else, I’m working all weekend, again. That kind of makes the week never end, but at least I don’t have to worry about going to class for the next two days. A friend of mine from HS is getting married today. I had wanted to go, but I can’t. At any rate, I decided to start the day off by doing some stuff around the house that I’ve been meaning to do for some time but have never gotten around to. In particular, I was doing some painting, which I generally hate doing. I know that Milenka will be happy to see the painting done in the dining room when she sees it though, and that’s really why I did it.
One of the few positive notes of the week is that I’m continuing to lose weight. I’m down around 6 pounds from where I was two weeks ago, which is actually lower than I’ve been in a long time. I can mostly attribute this to actually eating properly (or at least, not over-eating). This has been helped out by the fact that, due to the way our bills have fallen, the past couple of weeks money has been tight. This has made it unwise to stop off for fast food or order a pizza, which for some reason we had gotten into the habit of doing fairly regularly over the past month or two. This week the budget shows a surplus again, but I’m pretty sure we’ve decided to continue the trend.
I finally started watching Babylon 5 again as well. I’m actually starting watching about half way through the third season (half way through the show as well, actually) to expedite matters a little. I actually saw up through the end of the third season when it was on the air, but then it got dropped from the channel it was on (it was syndicated) so I never saw it again. The show has a very strong arc, so it’s not really something that you can just jump into the middle of and expect to have any idea what is going on. As such, I’ve turned to The Lurker’s Guide to Babylon 5 to read up on the older episodes to get me up to speed. I actually do remember some of it, but it’s been a long time. I’m not a big fan of soap operas really, but I love the format…

I haven’t been losing weight really. That is to say, I haven’t been trying. I actually gave up on FitDay around the same time classes started….I just never got around to logging what I was eating. I haven’t been losing weight really. That is to say, I haven’t been trying. I actually gave up on FitDay around the same time classes started….I just never got around to logging what I was eating. For a time, I was still eating right and just not logging anything, but eventually it progressed to doing neither. I tend to try to eat to feel better about life and being depressed as of late, I haven’t much cared what or how much I eat.
On the up side, I’m not terribly bad off. I’m still down a fair amount from where I started. I’m going to start eating less again, and I’m about to go for a walk/jog. I’ve heard exercise is good for depression anyways. I’m not sure if I’m going to bother with FitDay though. It’s easy enough to use and all, I just need to bother to take <5 minutes to input everything on a daily basis.

When I weighed myself on Saturday I was down another 4.5 pounds. I was hoping to lose 3 or 4 pounds, so that is definitely good. From here on out I had kind of planned on going for at least 2 pounds per week, but I’m guessing I’ll lose closer to 3 this week at least. I’d love to set a long term goal, but it’s really hard to plan when you have no idea what’s going to happen…
My “diet” is going well. I’ve had a couple of times where I’ve eaten more than I should have for a meal, but even then my calorie total for the day has never been high enough to maintain my weight, according to FitDay anyways. I’ve went out walking a few times as well. My theory here being that if I were to walk about half an hour a day I’d probably be getting the same amount of exercise that I used to get with my old job. I’m not making an effort to actually walk every day, but I figure a little here and there helps. On top of that, I always mean to jog, which I should probably give a try again. Of course, when I do it, I can only jog for a couple of minutes, and then I have to walk for a couple of minutes, and then jog again….etc. I’m sure if I do it enough that won’t be an issue though.

I started using FitDay last Sunday. It’s a fairly comprehensive system for tracking the foods you eat and their nutritional value. It also keeps track of how many calories you burn throughout the day and allows you to set weight goals and such and, since it knows how many calories are coming in and how many are going out (getting burned), it can tell you how to diet in order to meet your goal. You can also track body measurements as well as your mood (so you can look for a correlation between your mood and what you eat). It’ll spit out all kinds of reports telling you about all this as well.
Milenka told me that she had been using this for a long time now, and it looked interesting (looking at numbers always interests me for some reason), so I thought I’d give it a try. You can do pretty much everything I said above through the website itself, though I quickly found out that Milenka had, at some point, gotten FitDay PC, their version that you can run on your own computer, so I quickly started using it instead. I believe the only difference is that the home version will do more reports and some minor things (like mood) might not be available on the website. Of course, being local, it’s quicker as well.
This was a good excuse for me to start eating reasonably, which is my worst problem. more_link_text

Last week (or the week before I guess….they all blend together) I started to eat better, or rather less I should say. This leaves me feeling hungry but that’s pretty much inevitable when you’re used to eating a lot and you try to cut back. Oddly, I get a good sense out of it all anyways. I think it’s more satisfying than feeling full in a away. I didn’t completely cut back quite so much last week with my being sick and all. I’ll have to start again, but I’m sure that I’m better off now even than I was a couple of weeks ago anyways.
The pull-up thing quit working out really. This is mainly because we’ve tended to have a temp helping out lately for various reasons and this person ends up working in the area where the bar is, so I don’t have much in the way of a chance to use it like I would if I were doing that job. Secondly, I quickly found that a square bar isn’t really a good thing. I hadn’t really put any thought into it, but after using it for a couple of days my hands felt bruised from the uneven weight distribution. I got over that but it’s still a bit of a deterrent. I’ll still practice when I get a chance, but I’m not making plans to do 2 in a row for anytime too soon.
Our treadmill doesn’t work quite exactly right. Something is broken on it, and the bar on the bottom of it that adjusts it’s slope won’t stay in place. This means that it’s at it’s maximum incline at all times. This makes for difficult walking if one wants to use it. I gave it a go for about 10 minutes one day. Not only did my legs get tired really quickly from walking uphill, but my arms were just as bad. If I don’t hold onto the handrails, I start to fall off the end of the treadmill. The only way to avoid that is to walk faster. Even though the thing is motorized, when I walk faster, it moves faster. Of course with it moving faster, I fall off the end faster. The equilibrium is when I’m into a slow jog. Uphill. I can’t do that for long. So my only alternative is to use my arms to pull myself up, which gets tiring after a little while. The treadmill is out really.
I’d love to jog instead. It would work out great with my iPod. This silly winter thing is getting in the way though. Really, it’s been too cold. I can’t remember a winter this cold or snowy in a lot of years. I don’t mind it if it’s even 20 degrees out, but 5 is a bit too cold for exertion. Not that it matters anyways. The sidestreets around my house where I would go have been at least partially covered in snow and ice for weeks now. It never gets warm enough for them to melt off all the way before they get snowed on again. Maybe this weeks they will though….it looks like it’s supposed to be in at least the upper 20’s all week.
