Bedrest and Moving Furniture

Milenka is supposed to be on bedrest. This all started last week and at the time I thought they were over-reacting. Now, I still think they’re over-reacting, but perhaps I was under-reacting as well.

The sheet they gave her said that she was supposed to get up only to go to the bathroom and for “brief meals”. I find the latter rather amusing. What’s the intent there? No more than 5 minutes for a meal? Stuff it all down as fast as you can and then back to bed! (Ok, so I suppose they mean don’t take an hour to eat, but still….) She hasn’t exactly been following those instructions completely. She moves around a little bit now and then for various things, but to me, that’s OK. I really think they are over-reacting a bit.

But I must say, I was rather surprised when I got home last night and the furniture had been rearranged in the living room. Also, I noticed this after I had talked to her and she said her day was uneventful and she hadn’t really seen or talked to anyone all day (in person). The love seat and the recliner really didn’t need to swap positions on opposite sides of the room, at least not if she was doing it. I would have gladly done it instead. But I’m sure if anyone asks her, she’d say that I never do anything and “someone had to do it”. While I’ll admit that I’m not very good at doing things around here and a lot of things are left unfinished, if she had said “I’m going to move the furniture around tonight,” I would have made a point to move it before I went to work.

On the up side (and as an unfortunate boast to her efforts), her doctor’s visit went well today and she seems to be doing as well as, if not better than she was last week, so no damage was done.

Problem Solving Without Knowing The Cause

Can a problem be solved without knowing the actual cause? By solved, I really mean solved. Not just “I’ll do this today and that tomorrow and it’ll keep things going but the problem will keep on coming so I’ll keep on reacting.” Also, I mean any type of problem at all. Scientific, personal, work related, social, moral, medical or anything. I’m also thinking along the lines of problems that occur with a fair amount of frequency. If a problem happens only once or rarely, if may well be easier to just treat the symptoms. Not that that would be solving the problem, it just probably wouldn’t matter in such a case. I would almost say that dumb luck doesn’t count, but then, if you put band-aids on for long enough and happen to stumble across the cause, that seems valid (though inefficient).

I don’t really think it can be done myself, but maybe there are certain types of problems where this may work. I just wondered if anyone else had any thoughts.

New Host and DNS Propagation

Everyone should be seeing the new host now. (You may have noticed the post about changing hosts disappeared when it changed) The process was actually exceptionally painless. Before I changed name servers, I uploaded all my old stuff to the new host, created databases and imported the data, and changed WP’s config to use the new database. That was it. Everything worked afterwards. (I think :) ) It could hardly have been easier.

I’ve been left wondering about the whole DNS propagation time thing though. Everyone always says “24-48 hours”, as they have for years. Just last month, Milenka’s site had a DNS issue, and it was only a matter of hours before the site came back up for us. After changing my name servers the other day, it took less than an hour to update when I ran a whois (through cygwin). This was very exciting, but apparently it was querying a different server than my ISP actually uses, because I still was getting the old host in browsers. Still, when I got home from work and checked, I got the new host. I’m sure it could just be luck, but left wondering if the DNS servers don’t really cache for 48 hours any more. Maybe I’ll create some subdomains and time it.

Battlestar Galactica Season 3 Starts

I can’t possibly not mention that the Battlestar Galactica season 3 premier is tonight. I can’t wait. I have to admit, I’m not actually all that impressed by the previews that they’ve been showing, but considering the situation that they’re in and how wonderful and intense it’s been in the past I’m sure it will be great. Hopefully. :)

They’ve been doing these “webisode” things for the past couple of weeks now. They’re little video clips of a couple of minutes each that all deal with the resistance that’s taking place on Cylon occupied New Caprica. If you haven’t seen them and don’t want to or can’t, here’s the gist of them:

Tigh and Tyrol organize a resistance movement. Tigh takes a very “I don’t care what chances we take” attitude throughout. The end up hiding weapons in the tent that serves as their temple, which apparently is a place that the Cylons don’t enter. They end up finding out, shoot the place up, and people die. Specifically, Duck’s wife is killed. Jammer is in on the resistance as well and he gets pulled into interrogation. We don’t really know what happens with that, but the implication is, of course, that he’s turned in one way or another. In the end, they decide to start making explosives under the grain storage tent, which is right next to the hospital. I assume this is where it’ll pick up tonight. I don’t really remember Duck and Jammer…. I assume they’re two of the newer pilots that never really stood out to me, though I’m sure they’ll play a bigger part now.

Baby Names

Apparently a lot of people have been thinking that they’ve guessed the names that we’ve chosen for the babies. The source of this are two onesies that have the initials ‘I’ and ‘P’ on them. I’m 99.9999% sure that no one has actually guessed the names. They’re really hard to guess. I’ll give everyone one of the names though.

Ehzcryfgvygfxva

You might be thinking that that doesn’t look like a name, but it is, only it’s encoded in rot 13. Rot 13 is pretty common, so you can find encoder/decoders in lots of places, but rot13.com is as good as any.

And don’t try to leave a comment with the name…. its as good as spam if you do. :)
