Why You Should Use Firefox

I actually wrote this as a comment on Milenka’s blog to try to inform people about Firefox as I figured most of them are of a less technical nature. I wrote so much that I just can’t help but post it here as well though… :)

A few reasons why you should use Firefox instead of IE:

  • It’s more secure (more safe) than IE. Most spyware that you can pick up on the web targets IE. By using Firefox, you will avoid a good deal of that spyware. In fact, Firefox doesn’t even support activeX, which is how most spyware gets onto PC’s. (Of course that means that sites using activeX for legit purposes won’t work with Firefox, but there aren’t really very many cases where that will make a difference.)
  • It’s about 100 times more configurable than IE. It supports custom skins (Themes) and a whole slew of extensions that can add a myriad of different features. For me, firefox gives me a weather forecast in my menubar, I can use mouse gestures, I can block ads within web pages, I can right click on highlighted text and do a google search or a dictionary search, and I can close Firefox and have all my windows and tabs open back up right where they were if I want to. There are a TON of things you can do to customize Firefox!
  • It’s open source. more_link_text
