Soft Drink Warning Labels

Posted: July 14th, 2005 under General.

We need health warnings on soft drinks?.

A U.S. consumer group on Wednesday called for cigarette-style warnings on soft drinks to alert consumers that too much of the sugary beverages can make people fat and cause other health problems.

You might as well slap a label on just about any food out there. If you eat too much of anything it’s bad for you. Given, some things are worse for you than other things, but come on…. people can’t figure this out for themselves with the already clearly labeled nutrition information? I tend to think that people need to be more responsible for themselves…

My favorite part though…

The warnings are especially needed to counter the growing number of young people who drink soda, said the center.

Just like warnings have helped to stop young people from smoking?

Soft drinks also contain carbonation, which eats up the bones and teeth. I think that’s even worse than the fat thing, since it’s permanent and long-term damage that most people don’t even know about.

Actually, the warning lables and push to educate young people about the dangers of smoking have been highly successful. The growth trend in smoking was largely reversed and minimized after warning labels and education were instituted.

Everyone knows that smoking causes cancer and other health problems (except for those that totally deny it) Not everyone realizes that soda can make you fat or that it eats your teeth/bones.

I have a hard time believing people don’t realize that drinking pop can make you fat……that would require either a complete lack of understanding of basic nutrition (in which case if we label pop we should label a slew of other things as well) or a lack of caring (in which case if people can’t be bothered to read one label why would they bother to read another?).

I’ll go with you 100% on the carbination issue, but I”m not sure if that poses enough of a health risk to warrant the labels….plus it’s not the reason the group citied anyways.. :)

I think when you start talking about cigarettes it’s a different situation to an extent… the tabacco industry did everything they could to make sure people didn’t realize there was a health concern there. When the labels were initially introduced, it was a different situation than the situation with pop today…

So I’m guessing anyways….I really need to hunt around for some numbers on these things….I mean, smoking, drugs, excessive callorie intake bad? Huh? No shit. I’m pretty sure I knew that all when I was a kid…. but then I like to think I’m smarter than most… :P

I’m getting flashes of stats as well showing that obesity is a bigger health risk than smoking….It’s still hard to make a direct correlation since drinking pop isn’t anywhere close to the lone cause of obesity.

Now I’m currious and I”ll have to research…..sounds like another post, if I remember.

There should also be warnings on the labels of “light” versions of soda, since aspertame can cause all sorts of health problems. Blah blah

LABEL EVERYTHING! TELL ME WHAT IS GOING TO KILL ME! :p

Speaking of labels, have you seen the new “fruit tattoo” that is supposed to take place of the little sticky fruit labels? Apparently they’re going to be lazer-cutting the information into fruit.
