Apple Too Simple?

Is Apple too simple? They seem to design things in a clean, simple matter. Although I can appreciate that type of design, they tend to leave out some features in the process…

Take iTunes for example. They layout of everything is pretty clean. In fact, this makes it hard to work with if you’re not used to it. Depending on what you’re looking at, the buttons, which don’t move, can have different functions. The button in the upper right hand corner is notorious for this. If you’re not used to this, you end up looking all over the place trying to find out how to do something until you finally notice the button has changed and that it is the only way to access whatever feature it is that you’re looking for. It’s playlist-centric design is also a matter of simplicity, but it can get in the way. For example, if I want to burn a CD, I have to create a playlist of songs I want on that CD. It would be much easier, in my opinion, if it just had some sort of internal “burn playlist” so that you could just right click on songs and add them, or even drag the songs onto the burn button or something like that. You can at least use the search box to filter for, say, an album name and then burn from there, but that does little good if you’re creating a mix. Even though it apparently wants you to make a bunch of playlists, it doesn’t bother to offer any real way of organizing them well so they can quickly become a mess.

Quicktime is kind of wacky too. more_link_text
