War of The Worlds

I saw War of The Worlds last night. And yeah, it sucked.
(I’ll probably be giving away plot elements, if you care…)

Ok, so it didn’t really suck, it just wasn’t all that great. This is another over-hyped movie that just didn’t live up to my expectations. I don’t believe I ever read the book, and it’s been so long since I’ve seen the original movie that it’s like I never did, so I can’t bitch about how it slaughtered the original. Not that I would though. I almost always prefer the remake….

Everyone is talking about the special effects. They were really good. Everything blended very well and a 100′ tall tripod looked just like a real 100′ tall tripod. That said, the special effects weren’t exactly a focus of the movie. Don’t get me wrong, they were critical to the story and all…I just didn’t feel totally wowed by them. I think that’s good though….it felt real, and that’s the idea after all.

The acting was pretty good as well. Tom Cruise was pretty much Tom Cruise. I think he did a pretty good job, but if you’re one of those who think that he’s a crappy actor then rest assured that his performance sucked. The kids did a very good job (particularly the girl). Better than Tom Cruise for sure. Of course, good job or not, the kids whined, complained, and got in the way. This was probably because Tom Cruise’s character, Ray, was a really shitty father to them. They kind of bond throughout the movie and we’re all happy and whatnot, but Ray isn’t much of a hero really regardless.

That leads in nicely to the next point though….Ray is no hero. He manages to keep his kids alive and he manages to destroy a tripod, but that’s about it. I guess that does make him a hero in a way, but not the type of hero I’m looking for in an alien invasion flick.

That’s the biggest fallacy of the movie right there. In fact, I take back what I just said about Ray not being a hero. more_link_text
