"I come out here a lot and say we got a great show tonight: Wrong 90% of the time.....95%....Do I hear 98?"

Gummi Bears

Does anyone else remember The Gummi Bears cartoon from the 80’s? I was trying to convince Milenka that they really did exist one night, but she didn’t believe me until I could show her a webpage and prove that they existed. Still, I don’t think she had ever seen it. It was a Disney cartoon lined up along side of shows like Duck Tales, Chip and Dale’s Rescue Rangers, Talespin, Darkwing Duck, etc.

So in an effort to prove that more than just I had seen it, I decided to ask a guy I work with if he remembered it. He’s within a year of my age. He too thought I was crazy. I started asking other people my age if they remembered. Every single person remembered. One guy even started singing the theme song?? :) Once the first guy saw a picture of them he remembered right away (so he said). When I told Milenka this, she said that she was probably just too old to have seen it (she’s all of 2 years older than me). I then had to tell her that another guy I work with who’s 5 or 6 years older than she is remembered

So that still makes Milenka the only person to have no clue here.I can’t imagine why. When I was trying to convince her that they existed, she started listing off about 40 other 80’s cartoons asking me if I was thinking of a particular episode of each show. She’s knows a lot of shows I’ve never even heard of.

I remembered after looking at the picture. But, I was a Disney cartoon girl back when you had to pay for Disney.

Hell yeah, bouncing here and there and everywhere…somethign something that’s beyond compare… they are the gummi bears

I used to watch back when new ones were being made still on Sat mornings (back in my day we had 4 channels and we liked it). I downloaded an episode or two from alt.binaries.multimedia.cartoons awhile back and wow… the show seems a lot less epic and scary than I remembered for some reason.

I wonder whether disney still makes shows like this. They seemed to always have a couple different animated series going. Duck Tales, Tailspin, etc etc. Nowadays it seems to be frowned upon to produce an animated show for kids that isn’t ‘educational’ in some way. I watched Gummi Bears, Transformers, Duck Tales, etc all back in the day and turned out ok… or wait…

I loved them and I’m a year older then Linka. I can even sing the theme song still.

Josh and I were talking about old cartoons the other day and talked about the Gummies. I brought up the Wuzzles. So far I am the only one to remember them. Do you happen to remember that show? The characters were typically two animals in one. I remember butterbear, but don’t remember the others names. lol.

    The gummi bears fucking ruled.

I have the mp3 of the theme song.

ROCK ON with your bad self.

Pay for Disney? What do you mean Heather?

I understand where Nate’s coming from here. I too watched transformers and am fine, but I sometimes have this urge to turn into a firetruck. I try and try and try but….

I absolutely remember the Wuzzles. I used to have a stuffed bee/lion…umm, Bumblelion, yeah, I remember that. Actually, I found it and the other names on tv tomes’s wuzzle page. Apparently there were only 13 episodes made….who knew?

Michelle’s comment made me think of someone who might have at least one room with gummi bear posters all over the walls (if they’re not painted as such to begin with) and full of gummi bear stuffed animals and other merchandise….possibly even the stuffed animals will be posed and upon entering with a guest she would explain that this is the scene from 5:22 into episode number 34….oh, and obviously as soon as she opened the door to said room the theme song would start playing, since we all know she has that.
Now she has assured me that that is not the case, but who really knows?

I don’t usually get so many comments….at times like these I wish they were threaded! :)

Oh I loved the gummi bears, and I’m the same age as Milenka, just a couple of months younger. I remember when the Disney channel was a pay channel. Then we got sattelite dish and it was free again for a little while until they started controlling the dish networks more.

Ahhh…..The cable chanel. I get it. When I watched it, it was on fox. They used increadible amounts of power to shoot the show into the air for all to see within a 80? mile radius.

But it all moves to cable I see…. I remeber Animaniacs as well (Yacko, Wacko, and dot; Pinky and the Brain; Mindy and Buttons; et al). I loved that show. Then they came up with the WB network and decided it should be exclusively there instead. I mention cable because the only WB station we could get was WGN out of Chicago, which we could only get on cable which we didn’t have. (I don’t think WGN was ever really WB, but WB bought most of their airtime to show their crap) Years later Milenka and I enjoyed watching Pokemon (WB) on that same chanel….then WGN dropped the morning portion of the WB so that they could show reruns of 15+ year old shows that no one wanted to see. It was great…

    Ahem, I’m not bitter..
    :)

The name *Gummi Bears* rang no bells but once I saw the picture I remembered them.

Doesnt Bea not have cable? That could be why M doesnt remember the Gummi Bears. I know once I was on this Nickelodeon nostalgia sight and I was like dude, remember this one or this one and she didnt, cause of the no cable thing.

See, you post mere seconds after me and you don’t know what I had to say… :)

Bea doesn’t have cable. There’s no way in hell that she had cable 15 years ago. I don’t think it’s an option even today (of course a dish always is, but not when Milenka was little).

But then it was on fox when we were kids. In fact, I know that they even got the same fox chanel that I watched. Bea’s house is like smack dab in the middle of the state and with a big ‘ol antenna and a signal booster, she can get 2 to 3 of every network out there (from Grand Rapids (west side of state), Lansing (middle), and Detroit (east side)). It’s kind of nuts. No one can figure out how she missed it…

    Michelle,
Where did you find the theme song…I have been looking for it. I just found the Thundercats and downloaded it. I LOVED the Gummi Bears and all the 80’s cartoons!!!! I was a HUGE Snorks fan too. Who was your favorite Gummi Bear?

    Thanks,
    Tami

  13. August 5th, 2005 | 1:11 am

I don’t remember gummy bears, but I do remember kissyfur. Do you?

  14. August 5th, 2005 | 1:14 am

Oo! Oo! I just googled the Gummy Bears, I remember them now! The grouchy one and the magician and the chubby mother-type bear.

  15. August 5th, 2005 | 1:34 am

Yep, there wasthe purple magician fellow, the chubby motherly type, the big blue guy, the tan colored hefty one with the green hat, and the little pink one… and it seems like there was a skinny girl bear too. If I weren’t so lazy, I’d look at a picture.. :)

I actually never saw kissyfur, but it’s funny that you mention it because when I was trying to tell Milenka about it in the first place, she kept on saing “are you sure you don’t mean [this]” because she didn’t remember them. She listed off a whole bunch of 80’s cartoons, and kissyfur was one of them. I don’t know why I remember that though…

  16. August 15th, 2005 | 11:50 pm

I remember The Gummy Bears! Are these people mad?

“Gummy Bears bouncing here and there and everywhere, high adventures that are beyond compare!” or something like that

I freaking loved that cartoon growing up! GUMMY BEARY JUICE! Sweet memories of the long lost childhood. Oh, how I love to reminice.

Ever watch Fraggle Rock? That was a good one too!

  19. August 17th, 2005 | 12:22 am

Fraggle Rock season 1 comes out on dvd on September 6. Sure would like that one, Luke…ahem…

  20. August 19th, 2005 | 1:30 pm

Fraggle Rock was awesome. I always loved muppets… I swear that there are little rat-like creatures that lived with the pile of trash that also appear in Star Wars around Jabba. I’ll have to compare them using something other than my memory when it comes out on DVD..

I feel much pity for anyone who does not remember the Gummi Bears. Cubbi, Sunni, Tummi, Zummi, Grammi and Gruffi (my personal favourite). And don’t forget Dukey Igthorn! That would be a travesty!

It would be like growing up without the Smurfs! Heaven forbid! Although, sadly, my children will have to do this. These shows have not yet been resurrected.

Here in SA you’ll find that everyone over 18 remembers Gummi Bears. Our one-and-only paid channel (at the time) had “Open time” for an hour every night and every sunday was “Family Time” - we had Gummi Bears running every sunday here for about 3 solid years and EVERYBODY watched. If you didn’t have a TV, you went to a friend’s house.

Poor Milenka. Never mind, google it, you can buy the dvd’s of all the episodes online…
