Spoofing Your Referer
Refspoof is an extension for firefox that will let you spoof your referer when you visit a site. In case you didn’t know, whenever you click on a link, the site you visit will be able to see the name of the site that you just came from, the referer. Refspoof seems to work pretty well although it would be nice if you could have an “always on” if you were concerned about privacy. (on the other hand, if a significant number of people were to do this then it would be bad, in my opinion.) There is at least one other extension out there that will do this.
Why would want to make the site think it’s something different? The reasons vary from security testing (if you’re trying to stop hotlinking using refererrs, this is great for testing) to porn access to privacy to cracking. If you don’t know then you probably don’t need to but otherwise google is your friend.
And why do I need it? Just for fun really.

Referrer spam.
Populate someone’s logs and blogs with fake referrers, which they may link to or visit.
I get a lot of it.
Lucas! What up man! It’s Nate from Grand Haven HS back in the day. I saw a /. comment from Slaad and thought “Now why does that name seem familiar…”
Nice blog! Sorry to post this here, but I can’t see an address to email you. Looks like you’ve had an eventful six years! I’m out here at GVSU majoring in Stats. I’ve been in school forever, and have another year to go. I guess that’s what I get for changing majors three times.
Shoot me an email sometime. We’ve gotta have a drink or something and catch up next time you’re down here in the GH/GR area, or next time I’m up in Mt Pleasant donating money to the Indians. (A Stats major, yet I love to gamble…sad, huh?)
Another reason to spoof the referer is so you can send weird messages to webmasters through their logs. For instance, you could set your referer string to http://you-are-a-big-fat-doo-doo-head.com
Of course, you could be a little more creative, but it’s lots of fun when you do it to your friends.
Yeah, I’ve gone so far as to spoof friends for fun before just to see if they’d notice…
I was just thinking a week or so ago (as I was adding more entries to my .htaccess to block the spam) that I should spoof stupid spammy looking crap back at some of the spammer’s sites. They probably wouldn’t notice or care though.I could always set up something to do it a few thousand times and run it all though tor though….
Yeah man!
He’s onto something here.
This might sound kinda silly or pointless but we all hate spam right? (Well, like 99 percent of us hate it 99 percent of the time?)
And surely we’ve all heard of gallant sites such as http://www.cyberarmy.com or http://www.artofhacking.com - which don’t really organize attacks or tell you how to do them - more they…. Serve as hubs for those of us who wish to retain or privacy, freedom of expression and individuality… Anyway I’m not advertising or recruiting for anybody here but we’re all smart enough to identify SPAM and its sender. We can all identify ads and many of us can tell where they come from, be they swf of jpg or whatever.
Some of us can’t afford high speed connections and all our time and money goes into downloading ads. Blocking unsolicited ads shouldn’t be our only way to remove them!!
Ever noticed BIG websites going down when someone coordinates a DoS (Denial of Service) attack? I think you understand what I’m getting at. Someone should start some kind of DoS network to organize these attacks. People would donate their bandwidth to bombarding the victim with as many requests for information as possible — as it would be on a volunteer basis by individuals, if somebody didn’t like the idea, they could just pull out: ie, when only those that approve participate, it becomes a very democratic system, so we would only be taking down victims where the majority thought we would be doing society a service! We could take ALL the bandwidth out of SPAM advertisers in our downtime!!!
Maybe I’m just an idiot who rants and raves, maybe it’s a good idea.
I know i”m probably not the first person to think of this, maybe you’ve all read it a million times before but gee whiz… If you agree with this… I don’t know, start threads on all the messageboards you know. Create a website. This could be like Cyberflashmobs dot com or something. (Look up “flash mobs” or “flashmobs” on google if you’ve never heard of this idea)
If you’ve never heard of this before and you need a leader and direction -come on you’re too smart to need me, admit it- (though I’m not a nerd and I’m rarely online - sporadically, at that) then email me. try MOOwalterMOOotherMOOsideMOOatMOOhotmailMOOdotMOOcomMOO and yeah I’ll reply in about a hundred years, I guarantee it.
(Remove any references to cows or similar from my email address or I’ll cry)
