Happy Chrismahanukwanzakah. I saw this a couple of weeks ago or some such (I think on Engadget) and it periodically pops into my head and I have to come back to the site…it’s catchy, check it out.

Comment Spam Stopped Dead

Dec 19

Posted: under Technology.

It’s amazing. Comment spam is a thing of the past for me (for now anyways). You may recall that on Nov 27 I installed a security code for the comments. This is one of those images with numbers that you have to type in before it lets you post. Bots that post spam can’t read the code from the image and can’t post. What a difference it has made. In the last 22 days I have had 2 spammed comments. That’s it. These must have been entered by hand to get past the code, and they followed the unusual pattern of there being only two of them, both pointing to different URL’s. This is odd because most of the spam I have gotten in the past will be one URL posted in 5 or 6 different comments at once. The URL’s weren’t in the blacklist, so they even got posted but I noticed them within a day or so and they were wiped out.

MT-Blacklist has logged exactly 0 hits. Not one spammed comment made it through the security code to get blacklisted. This means my grand total for the last 3+ weeks is 2. I used to get probably more like 2 a day on average (not much, I admit). I’m totally impressed. I have to highly encourage anyone who has trouble with comment spam (does anyone not?) to install a security code thingy. MT users can get the one I used here. It isn’t really easy to install, but if you know how to edit a file, move files around, and follow directions it won’t be hard either (just takes a while). To anyone else Google is your friend. If you have problems it’s at least worth a shot.

SpreadFirefox.com to Make Things Right.

Dec 19

The folks at Spread Firefox screwed up and they’re not only willing to admit it but they’re willing to make for it. They emailed those who donated to the ad again yesterday:

While we sent out a press release about the ad on Wednesday evening and
posted on Spread Firefox on Thursday morning, we have received feedback
from a number of people rightly complaining that, because we sent out
the email announcement about the ad late, they weren’t able to purchase
a copy of the paper. We screwed up and we want to make things right,
even if it costs us some money.

They’re offering to send either the final poster or a copy of the paper itself. I think I’m going to opt for the poster since it’s easier for them and just get my paper from the publisher.

It’s not terribly often that I see a stupid mistake made and then soon after the responsible party stepping up, admitting there is a problem, and then fixing said problem. Kudos to the Spread Firefox Team.
