Ginger Snaps and Requiem For a Dream

If you’re looking for a good horror flick, see if you can find a copy of Ginger Snaps. It’s about two sisters who turn into werewolves more or less… For what I’d assume is a low budget movie, it’s done quite well. My favorite thing is that it hit 72 theaters and brought in $129,000…… :P It’s from Canadia I believe actually. There are two sequels as well (the third one is a prequel actually come to think about it…) that are pretty good too, but the first one is the best.

Requiem For a Dream is interesting. It’s basically about several people who’s lives spiral out of control due to drugs. It’s very artsy with some interesting cinematography and lots of imagery. I’m not sure how entertaining it actually is…..I “liked” it though.

On a completely unrelated note, the clocks move back 1 hour tonight. I think last year I actually laid in bed half awake thinking that this meant the day was an hour short and just bummed (which of course makes no sense because I was just wasting more time…)…once I actually woke up I realized what was going on, but by that time my extra hour was gone :)

Kracker Concert

We went and saw Uncle Kracker at The Machine Shop on Wednesday night. Opening were two local bands, Dixie Huster and Jocaine. Both have a kind of southern rock kind of sound….similar to what Kid Rock and Kracker do. Everything was pretty good. The place is basically a small club, and we were able to get right up front, which means that we were about 3 feet way from the stage, which was very cool. The band was right in front of us. I can see how it would suck if we weren’t right in front, but we were there plenty early :) I definitely plan on going back sometime to see other bands. They occasionally get smaller national bands in there (they have Drowning Pool there this weekend). On the downside, although loud, the sound quality sucked. The vocals were in particular messed up, but it was sometimes tough to pick out different instruments too. I think next time I’ll wear ear plugs. They generally tone things down a little bit, and I think it would be easier to hear all of the music. On top of that, I’m sure it would still be loud, and the music would still shake your whole body… :) Despite sounding rather poor, in general anything so loud isn’t too bad, and being so close to the band is muchly so worth it. This is the first time I’d seen a concert in a venue with less than maybe 5000 people or so…

Kid Rock showed up too for part of a song. Everyone went nuts and started pushing heavily. It was actually hard to stand up….it felt like perhaps some people wanted to mosh…..we didn’t make it that far though >:)

Kracker’s band was all locals…..it’s really really weird because his bass player looked really familiar to me, but I have no idea why. I don’t go to concerts much, and like I said, the ones I go to are really big, so I can never see the band well anyways (although come to think of it, they have screens sometimes…). I can’t imagine that I’ve really seen him before, but yet it still feels that way. It’s very odd. Worst yet, I don’t even know what his name is, so I can’t google it and see what else he’s done! Maybe I’ll write to Kracker…

After the show, we were outside talking to Jocaine (it took me a while to figure it out, but the lead singer is Jocaine and his band is I75 North….). He was saying that he had been talking to someone (I want to say he said the drummer from Sugar Ray…) who has apparently written a couple of songs for Ashley Simpson. This guy said that she lip syncs all the time… :)

Yet Another Busy Week

Here we go again. This week will somehow be busier than most. What fun.

Just to keep everyone’s interest, I’ll start off with something completely offtopic: The Lions. They won again. Woo hoo. They actually played good this time around and thanks to a couple of dumb plays by the Giants, They came out on top. It was interesting really, because you could really see on their couple of drives (particularly the last one) that the Giants had just given up. About every play they ran was some horrible failure. They even gave up a TD. Harrington was actually looking like a good QB. He threw 18/22 and 230 yards. On top of that, Detroit has a huge number of injuries to key players, but their second and third string players are stepping up and doing well. There are two funny things about all of this. First of all is that before this season, Detroit had lost something like 24 games in a row while on the road, an NFL record. This year, they’ve won all of their road games and aren’t doing so well at home. Also funny is that two weeks ago, the Giants creamed Green Bay. Last week, Green Bay killed the Lions. Then this week the Lions come out and beat the Giants. Wacky stuff. Anything can happen.

Like I was saying, this week will be busy. I have some homeworky stuff due in the middle of the week that I need to finish up, and that doesn’t help things. I have the obvious normal work and school things going on, but I have a big presentation thing at work tomorrow and I’m putting in OT to prep for it and to do it. Then, on Wednesday we’re going to see Uncle Kracker. On top of all that, I’m trying to get extra work done around the house so things are clean and completed when Milenka comes home from her surgery. With the exception of the housework, I should be caught up by the end of the week, which is just in time to have to work on some other things…. :)

I’ve come up with an obsession for Chinese health balls. You may know them by another name because they go by several. They are iron balls that you twirl around in your hands. I’m not so sure about the spiritual side of the whole thing, I just like doing it. They warrant a post of their own with more details though…hopefully I can get some good pictures too. They’re the same as any others out there (and I mean that literally…this is a strange phenomenon), but I love the color depth. Anyways, more later.
